Restaurant was started by a hard working local couple named Irving and his wife
Frankie Jones. Irving joined the Air Force during the Korean Crisis where he
learned to service and repair diesel engines. He worked with a small team of
engineers constructing microwave tower sites across France Belgium and Germany.
He returned to civilian life in 1955 where he joined Diesel Injection in
Norfolk. In 1957 he met Frankie and married her in 1959 and together they had
three children Cindy, Curtis, and David. In 1969 Irving left Diesel Injection
to start his own diesel repair company named Allied Diesel & Hydraulics.
Over the next 12 years Irving and Frankie built a successful Business together.
Restaurant started to take shape when Irving and Frankie sold their diesel
repair business in 1981 and started thinking of what to do next. Like any other
repair business, customers were not usually happy about having to spend
thousands of dollars on an engine repairs. Irving said that if he ever started
another business it would be one in which customers smiled when he did business
with them. After contemplating this notion for several years he decided to draw
on his boyhood memories from 1939 in his mother and father's Barbecue
Restaurant which was started as an addition to their Esso
service station in High Point, NC.
1985 Irving and Frankie decided to open their restaurant in the Churchland/Western Branch area of Portsmouth and
Chesapeake. After many months of blood, sweat and tears in renovating the
retail space at 5811 W. Norfolk Rd. they finally opened their doors on January
16th 1986. In the beginning times were tough but they hung in there and built a
thriving business that has flourished for more than 20 years. The restaurant is
now being run by their children who continue their tradition into the future.
